In a year-long education effort about the role of diet in helping to prevent cancer, Executive Chef Charles Phillips of Nashville’s award winning 1808 Grille (http://www.1808grille.com) has partnered with the National Foundation for Cancer Research to promote healthy eating habits that aid in cancer prevention.

Diamond Claddagh Ring

Celtic jewellery is being spotted on celebrities, in movies, and on television more frequently bringing centuries old designs into the modern spotlight. The Claddagh ring is a traditional Irish symbol consisting of 2 hands holding a crowned heart representing love, loyalty, and friendship. The popular design has been worn by movie stars, musicians, political figures, and royalty, revitalizing it’s symbolism and bringing new life to an old design.

One of the first movie stars to be seen wearing a claddagh ring was Julia Roberts in 1995. It is speculated that it was given to her by Daniel Day Lewis. Jennifer Aniston and Tate Donovan exchanged claddagh rings to celebrate their first anniversary. Jude Law gave Sienna Miller a claddagh ring. She continued to wear it with the heart pointing in after their break up in 2006, showing she was taken. The Duke, John Wayne, wore a claddagh ring, as did his “Quiet Man” co-star Maureen O’Hara. Dermot O’Leary always carries one that his mother gave him, although he does not wear it. Other stars spotted with a claddagh ring include Irish actor Gabriel Byrne, Rebecca Gayheart, Barry Fitzgerald, Mia Farrow, and Walt Disney. Walt’s statue at Disneyland even wears a claddagh.

Many musicians also wear claddaghs. Irish musicians Liam and Noel Gallagher from the band Oasis have both sported the claddagh, as has U2 singer Bono. In her book Strange Days, Patricia Kennealy explains that she gave Doors frontman Jim Morrison a gold claddagh and he gave her a silver one in a pagan hand-fasting ceremony. Country Music Singer Maura O’Connell wears a claddagh wedding band that was passed down through her family over the generations. Bing Crosby was also known to wear one. A claddagh ring is referred to in the Hold Steady song “Your Little Hoodrat Friend”. The design has also been used as a logo by Scottish rock band Simple Minds.

Even political figures have been seen with the design. President John F. Kennedy and Jackie Kennedy were given a set of claddagh rings upon their visit to Galway in 1963. He was often photographed wearing one. The people of Galway presented Ronald Reagan with a claddagh ring in 1984. Bill Clinton and Winston Churchill have also been seen wearing one.

Royalty has also had a great interest in the claddagh. Dillons of Galway is the original manufacturers of claddagh rings. It was established in 1750 and was granted the Royal Patent. The Claddagh was the only ring made in Ireland that was worn by Queen Victoria, Queen Alexandra and King Edward VII. One was also worn by King George V. Princess Grace and Prince Rainier of Monaco were given a claddagh design brooch and cufflinks in Connemara marble in 1962.

The claddagh has also made its way into movies. Oliver Stone’s 1991 film “The Doors” portrays the hand fasting ceremony in which Jim Morrison and Patricia Kennealy exchanged claddagh rings. Claddaghs are worn by the leading characters in the 2004 film “Ladder 49”. Edward Norton’s character Worm wears a claddagh in the 1998 movie “Rounders”. It also appears in the 1991 film “Dead Again”. In the movie “Powder”, Sheriff Barnum’s wedding ring is a claddagh. The character Dante Hicks can be seen wearing a claddagh ring in “Clerks I” and “Clerks II”. Barry gives Audrey a claddagh ring in the movie “The Brothers McMullen”. A number of Irish-American characters wear claddagh rings in the 1998 movie “Monument Ave”.

It also has appeared on the small screen. Sales of Claddagh rings skyrocketed after it was seen on “Buffy the Vampire Slayer” in 1998. Angel, a vampire originally from Ireland, gave Buffy a claddagh ring for her 17th birthday to show that they were eternally joined. He also wears one. Claddaghs have appeared in several scenes of the show “Brotherhood”, often worn by character Michael Caffee. A claddagh ring was presented as a birthday gift in two episodes of “Surprise the Ring”. On the soap opera “Days of Our Lives”, Bo gave Carly a claddagh ring. The claddagh also appeared on the TV show “Friends”. In the episode “The One with Rachel’s Book” a claddagh appears on the magna doodle that hangs on the door of Joey and Rachel’s apartment.

A few weeks ago the news announced that Bill Clinton went to North Korea and negotiated getting the two girls back to the US. Obviously it was the two girls that were sentenced like 10 yrs in labor camps. It doesn’t go further on the details of what was said or negotiated. Does anyone know more details?

JFK named his brother, Robert to be the Attorney General. Isn’t it strange that while Bill Clinton is now espousing Hillary’s qualifications for president, he never put her into any real position of authority in his administration?

Decorated Military Leaders Question Gary Miller’s Military Service; Issue Call For Full Disclosure

In the wake of accusations in Harper’s Magazine Online that Congressman Gary Miller misrepresented his military service during the Vietnam era, three respected military veterans, Major General Paul Vallely, Colonel John Fer, a Prisoner of War during Vietnam and former top level White House Military Officer, Lt. Colonel Robert “Buzz” Patterson have issued a call for Miller to release his military medical and service records. The three veterans form the Military and Veterans Affairs Advisory Committee to advise Miller’s opponent for the GOP nomination in California’s 42nd district, Phil Liberatore.

Miller’s bio going back to his days in the California Assembly states that he served in the U.S. military from 1967 – 1968, but according to the Harper’s article, Miller was discharged after just 49 days of enlistment in 1967. This truncated enlistment appears to fall far short of Private Miller even finishing boot camp. Currently, all references to Miller’s military service have been removed from his official biography online.

“I am deeply concerned about any person distorting their military record especially a sitting United States Congressman,” said Major General Vallely. “As military veterans, we expect candidates to disclose their military service records. There have been too many instances of politicians and candidates for office distorting their record of service. Politicians and candidates should not hesitate to release their military record so as to remove any question or doubt about the manner in which they served their country.”

“Those with nothing to hide release records like this as a matter of routine,” added retired Colonel Fer, a respected combat veteran who was a Prisoner of War for over six years including time at the infamous Hanoi Hilton with Senator John McCain. “Those with something to hide or who have things they don’t want voters to know about, muddy up the water. Today we are calling on Gary to do the right thing and release his service and medical records.”

“This Memorial Day weekend we celebrated the lives of America’s finest and bravest who served our country-including the dozen of sons and daughters of the 42nd district whom Gary Miller voted to send into harm’s way,” added Lt. Colonel Patterson. “If he’s done so while lying about his own service then he needs to step aside.”

The news of Miller’s distorted military record comes weeks after a similar scandal broke around Richard Blumenthal, the Connecticut Attorney General running for a U.S Senate seat who had embellished his military service in the US Marine Reserves and just days after Senator Orrin Hatch (R-UT) introduced an amendment to the Stolen Valor Act criminalizing anyone giving a fraudulent representation of combat.

Miller, who has dodged questions regarding his military service, is quoted in the book “Once a Soldier, Always a Soldier,” which highlights and honors military veterans serving in Congress as saying: “It has been a tremendous honor to have served in the U.S. Army. The leadership skills which I experienced in the U.S. Army allow me to take the lead on issues which promote a stronger defense.”

Major General Paul Vallely retired in 1991 from the US Army as Deputy Commanding General, US Army – Pacific in Honolulu, Hawaii. General Vallely graduated from the US Military Academy at West Point and was commissioned in the Army in 1961 serving a distinguishing career of 32 years in the Army. He is an author, lecturer, and was a senior military analyst for seven years with Fox News. He was the Military Committee Chairman for the Center of Security Policy in Washington, D.C. General Vallely currently serves as CEO of Stand Up America.

Colonel John Fer (Ret.) flew combat missions in Southeast Asia as an EB-66C Destroyer pilot with the 41st Tactical Reconnaissance Squadron of United States Air Force. On February 4th 1967, he was forced to eject over North Vietnam while flying his 54th combat mission. He was captured and became a Prisoner of War for over six years at the Hanoi Hilton. After spending 2220 days in captivity, he was released during Operation Homecoming on March 4th, 1973. He became a school principal after 28 years of military service. Colonel Fer is currently Director of Ministries for his church.

Robert “Buzz” Patterson is an author and a decorated United States Air Force pilot (Ret.) with 20 years of active duty service. From 1996 to 1998, Lt. Colonel Patterson served in the White House and was the Senior Military Aide to President Bill Clinton. During that time he was responsible for the President’s Emergency Satchel, commonly known as the “nuclear football”, which contains the means by which the President can launch nuclear weapons or retaliate with nuclear weapons. This “nuclear football” accompanies the president 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, no matter where he is in the world. Patterson is a decorated pilot for his service at the White House and for flying operations in combat. Lt Colonel Patterson is currently a pilot for a major airline.
